Happy National Gummi Bear Day, (Really a thing🤷🏾♂️)
HERE'S SOME INCREDIBLY EXCITING NEWS for the handful of you who've been really struggling to leverage AI to the fullest, but can't because you have to follow HIPAA rules due to the nature of of your org, whether it's medical records or personal identifying information you manage.
It truly sucks because you really WANT to protect your members' information, but that necessary level of security is extremely inconvenient. Ughhh, special documents that have to be signed, workarounds that have to be set up that your peers don't have to deal with, strict regulatory repercussions if mismanaged. Listen, the HIPAA compliance struggle is REAL!
Sooooo...
Google, that non-HIPAA-compliant little company that charges you $20 to use Gemini, just got a major competitor: themselves.
Google just dropped Gemma 4, an open-source AI LLM. Open source means FREE!...Freer than the people at that “clothing‑optional” hot spring I surprisingly bumped into at Glenwood Springs with my kids a few months ago. 😣
Any who...
I could talk about WHY it's free, but I'd rather talk about the WHAT:
Gemma 4 is a free, downloadable full LLM, meaning you get the whole AI for free.
You store it on your computer/server so you own everything it touches (HIPAA-safe because it never leaves your system).
There are 4 models ranging from one so small it fits on your phone (but less intelligent) to one so large you need a specific server to run it (but highly capable and intelligent).
The catch? It's just a little technical to set up. But honestly, anyone with time to try can easily do it.
It sounds like you need a supercomputer or an IT degree to do this. You don't. What they did is ground breaking, the smallest version of Gemma is so lightweight and can actually run right on your normal office laptop with minimal memory. You don't need crazy servers to get HIPAA-safe AI; you just need to know which tiny file to download.
Actionable Task:
Get Your HIPAA-Safe AI Running locally (On your computer)
Option 1 (DIY):
Ask AI (ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini) this exact prompt:
"Walk me through step-by-step how to download and set up Gemma 4 on my computer. I'm not technical, so explain like I'm a beginner. Include which Gemma 4 model size is right for my computer "
Option 2 (Let Me Help):
Click the link to schedule time with me to talk through what this setup looks like. I'm here to serve you. 🙏🏾
Don't be intimidated. I promise you, the hardest part is starting.
Remember: The organizations serving our most vulnerable shouldn't be technologically disadvantaged. HIPAA-compliant AI exists. It's accessible. It's transformative. The only barrier left is your willingness to explore it. Your team and the mission deserves better than outdated workflows.
PS. Compliancy aside, you can save a lot of money with this too, if you want to stop paying $20/Mo. 🤫

P.S. Drowning in tasks AI could handle? Don't know where to start? Need to save time and money? Sincerely, let's talk.
